Ultrasound is a medical examination using high-frequency sound waves greater than 20,000 Hz. During the ultrasound imaging or Ultrasonography, high-frequency sound waves are emitted from the transdneer. The sound waves bounce against the tissues that have different reflection and passing ability. The transdneer is acting as a receiver of the sound reflection at various levels, identifying the density and depth of the tissues. The signals received will be processed into images for further diagnosis. It also enables surgeons to view the body image during operations.

Benefits of Ultrasound

  • No painful sensation during the procedure.
  • It can be performed without any other injection or surgery.
  • Ultrasound machine offers a higher clarity for soft tissue imaging, comparing to x-ray.
  • Broad ranges of organs can be examined.
  • Lower costs when comparing to oher examination methods.
  • Patients are not exposed to any radiation, offering a higher safety than other tests using radiation such as x-ray and CT scans.

Limitations of Ultrasound

  • Ultrasound may not be applied to organs with air composition such as the lungs and gaster. As air does not reflect the sound waves, no signal is received for imaging.
  • Ultrasound may not be applied to bones or organs with bone obstructions. The sound waves will not be able to reach the desired organs as all will be reflected back due to the bones.

The quality of the result depends on various factors. The sound waves can penetrate through the body at certain depths. Therefore, imaging of obese patients or very dense bones might be difficult. Also, images of body parts with gas obstructions might not be clear. Experiences of the person performing ultrasound also affect the examination precision. It is recommended that the procedure is performed by ultrasound expertise.

Objectives of Using Ultrasound Device

  • Pregnancy tests: Ultrasound offers a wide range of benefits to pregnancy tests. During the initial phase, it can be performed to estimate delivery date and ectopic pregnancy. The device detects the possible issues during pregnancy, such as congenital anomalies and disorders in infants, breech positions, etc. Ultrasound can also identify the gender of the infant for parents who wish to find it out before hand. For preterm labor, doctors can also perform ultrasound tests to assess the infant´s weight.
  • Diagnosis: Anomalies affecting a large area of internal organs and soft tissues can be diagnosed with ultrasound. Examples are the heart, blood vessels, liver, gallbladder, spleen, pancreas, kidneys, bladder, ovary, eyes, thyroid gland, or testicles. Diagnosis of dense bones and body parts with air or gas - such as the brain, spinal cord, and intestine – might be less efficient.
  • Applications in Medical Procedures: Some procedures require support from ultrasound, such as tissue sampling for further diagnosis. In the case that the tissue samples are taken from a sensitive site for further laboratory study, ultrasound enables us to view a clear image of the organ and perform with higher precision.
  • Treatment and Therapy: Ultrasound device can sometimes detect and treat soft tissues which have been injured or damaged.

Ultrasound uses sound waves for medical purposes. Its ability to provide both static and dynamic examination or diagnosis results is the main highlight of this device. Though image clarity and resolution are yet at the same level as other tomography methods, ultrasound is sufficiently efficient, practical, and suitable for rural hospitals or medical facilities. The device can be transported with convenience and placed by the patient´s bed for agile examination.
