PET/MRI technology helps to provide doctors with high-resolution molecular imaging and organ tissue imaging.

15 Jul 2022

PET/MRI technology helps to provide doctors with high-resolution molecular imaging and organ tissue imaging. Diagnosis for a small-scale lesion with complications can be performed with more accuracy and precision. It is suitable for cancer diagnoses such as liver, brain, gynecological, head and neck cancers, and lymphoma.

Benefits of PET/MRI

1. Imaging of soft tissues and organs with higher clarity and resolutions than the general computed tomography. It is great for diagnosing small-scale lesions and complex organs, and differentiation of soft tissues with similar density. The device also provides imaging of organ functions such as the brain functions when stimulated, water molecule movement in soft tissues, nerve fiber layer imaging, and blood circulation in the brain.

2. Metabolic/molecular imaging offers the image combinations between PET imaging and anatomical/functional imaging. This provides additional information for the ultimate accurate and precise diagnosis.

3. Less amount of radiation is applied when comparing to the general PET/CT scan. No radiation is emitted during the MRI imaging procedure. Instead, it uses a high-voltage magnetic field attenuation and radiofrequency (RF) stimulation. This poses lower radiation to the patient and suitable for patients with radiation sensitivity, such as children.

4. For patients with radiocontrast media allergy, the device can be specifically modified to create vascular imaging without performing the magnetic resonance angiography. This way, vascular abnormality imaging can be done safely on patients with radio contrast media allergies.

5. PET/MRI imaging system can also, at the same time, measure the accumulated radiopharmaceutical agents of the site being examined. This offers complete and high precision for both anatomical and molecular imagings, reduces radiation, and saves time.

6. PET/MRI device is designed for imaging from head to toe in just one position adjustment. The device offers full-body imaging with less time. Quiet Suite System offers noise reduction and keeps the patients undisturbed during the procedure while maintaining the complete image quality.

7. Moving organ imaging techniques offers a higher clarity of lung imaging, such as chest and abdominal cavities during breathing. The device modifies the movement rates of the chest images during breathing, offering clearer images of the lung.

8. Artificial intelligence (AI) system helps to identify the suitable plane position for the precise, accurate, correct, and personalised imaging for each individual.

9. Radiation attenuation values can be reduced with accuracy, using today´s most sophisticated applied technology to map radiation attenuation through computed tomography.

PET/MRI imaging is used medically to diagnose cancer, its location, stage, and metastasis. The procedure can also be applied to diseases caused by dementia or deterioration of brain cells, nervous system, and radiation therapy planning in cancer patients.

The current situations have demonstrated that PET/MRI system offers useful information in structural, cellular, and molecular levels. It also notably increases efficiency in diagnosis and treatment.

PET/MRI technology has not reached its ultimate potential. All areas can still be developed such as equipment, magnetic field concentration, techniques, appropriate radiofrequency for each diagnosis, energy attenuation correction, and PET/MRI imaging systems. Further development can be done in examination reliability and precision, annihilation photons location establishment, PET scan, image overlaying management of each system, as well as the improvement in contrast media and radiopharmaceutical agents.

The roles of PET/MRI systems will increase as it offers more specific information that cannot be achieved through other technologies. The device provides great advantages to the medical industry, including early detection, understanding the biology of disease, identifying stages of diseases, as well as planning the most suitable treatment and follow-up.
